GUINEA PIG OF LOVE: THE PLEASURE CAMP
ELLE
JULY 23, 2012
BY JULIA ALLISON

I grew up going to camp: sailing camp, ballet camp, Canadian canoe camp, even debate camp.  But I’ve never attended Pleasure Camp…until now.

I’m on the floor, cross-legged on a yoga mat, surrounded by 35 other women, mostly a decade to three older that me, listening to a very beautiful, very dynamic blonde in a tight red bandage minidress tell me to visualize straddling a horse.  “Inhale deeply, breathe in and out” she purrs.  “Feel the creature beneath you. Up, down, [read more...]

Does anyone know a great health insurance broker?

So, I’ve been paying $540 for insurance through United Health’s Oxford program for almost a year now, and I’m convinced I’m paying much too much.  (Let’s just put it this way: I was at my doctor’s the other day discussing my premiums and one of the guys there said “oh my god, that’s my RENT.” Yeah.)

The only issue is that I don’t really know where I’ll be getting my care – New York, Chicago, LA, SF?? So I probably need a plan that works everywhere … I have no idea where to start looking.  Or how??  Do I go [read more...]

Learning how to eat Gluten free is … interesting.

Learning how to eat Gluten free is … interesting.

As many of you already know, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease about two months ago (my physician had given me a blood test on the basis of some suspicious digestive symptoms I had been reporting, and then it was confirmed through an intestinal biopsy by specialist Dr. Eng in Manhattan).

Celiac – which I had never heard of prior to June (I know, I know, I’m out of it) – is basically an autoimmune disease in which your small intestine is damaged from eating products containing gluten (which [read more...]

Acupuncture at The Steadman Clinic

NonSociety Recommends: Acupuncturist Nicholas Steadman

I’ve been meaning to post about my experience with licensed acupuncturist Nicholas Steadman ever since I started seeing him in the summer of 2009 (Full disclosure: he graciously provided me with a free trial of his services).

I went to him originally to combat my stress and insomnia issues – plus, I was simply curious about acupuncture in general.  I had heard people talk about it (sometimes positively, sometimes negatively), but I wanted to come to my own conclusions.

In case you missed it the first time around, check out my web show on the subject, as well [read more...]

You can certainly medicate yourself regularly with painkillers if you are prone to headaches, or with antihistamines if you have allergies, anti-inflammatories if you have arthritis, or sedatives if you can’t sleep, but how much better it would be to solve those problems by modifying diet and patterns of activity and rest and by using natural remedies.

Dr. Weil, “8 Weeks to Optimum Health,” a book I bought on Amazon two days ago at the recommendation of Kevin Rose, who is in pretty damn good shape himself!

Check out today’s episode of TMIweekly, wherein Mary discusses cute exercise clothes to inspire us all to work out.

I actually brought my gym gear to Vegas!!  I’m looking forward to being motivated by the girls – last time we were here, at the Hard Rock for Randi’s bachelorette, Mary gave me a personal training session which almost killed me.  It was awesome.

Here’s the thing about me & the gym: we have a love/hate relationship. The two biggest issues? 1) I get bored really, really easily, and 2) I find it hard to get [read more...]

Hey Julia,

So you and Mary and Meghan are always raving about blueprint cleanse. Are there detoxing alternatives for us girls who don’t live in NYC?  And what about for those of us who are on a student budget? Any tips are appreciated!

Shannon

Hi bunny!

So, first of all, Blueprint offers shipping ANYWHERE now, which is clearly the best thing to have happened to America, pretty much ever.

And for student budgets, hmmmmmm, that’s a very, very good question.  Blueprint IS expensive, especially if you’re on a tight budget.

I do have some ideas for you, though.  When I’m not doing Blueprint, [read more...]
